HISTORY

Honor Flight

Chapin Woman’s Club has had the privilege of working with Honor Flight South Carolina for several years.  Honor Flight’s original mission was to make certain each and every World War II veteran has the opportunity, regardless of circumstances, to visit Washington, DC to visit the National WWII Memorial and the other memorials built in their honor.  Now almost 70 years since 1945, time is of the essence for these heroes and we are seeing more and more Korean and even Vietnam era veterans on the flights.

CWC has made financial  contributions to allow our American military veterans to travel to see their monuments in Washington, DC at no cost.  We also do “Mail Call” and, as each flight sends 100 of our honored veterans, this is no small undertaking.  We provide at least one letter for each veteran on every flight.  Our club members and their families write letters, our senior citizens at Crooked Creek Park have written letters but perhaps the best letters have come from the various school children who have participated in the letter writing campaign!

The next scheduled departure for Honor Flight South Carolina out of Columbia is slated for May 13, 2015.  Special guest on this trip will be Corporal Kyle Carpenter, winner of the Congressional Medal of Honor!  Please visit the Honor Flight website www.honorflightsc.com for more information.

The HUB (His United Building)

The HUB is owned and operated by a coalition of community churches in the Chapin area.  The staff is entirely volunteer.   Recently, we approved a grant of $4,000 to help fund the building of a playground on the HUB property for the area’s children.  Chapin Woman’s Club volunteers help with tutoring Wednesdays after school.  We have also funded one-week summer programs for students to aid with their reading skills.  These camps serve approximately 25 students.  During the holidays, food, activities and book bags are supplied to the students who have completed the after-school program.  The Hub remembers the students at Christmas with a Christmas party, complete with gift bags and, of course, Santa!
